Port Knowledge: Container Ships
Container ships are an important mode of transport in shipping and maritime industry.
As a matter of fact, container ships are also divided into different types.
Today, we will introduce different types of container ships based on the volume of containers they carry.
- Full Container Ship:
The entire vessel is designed to carry containers, and most container ships belong to this category. - Semi-Container Ship:
There is a portion of the holds designed for container loading of the semi-container ships, while other holds are the same as the cargo holds of general cargo ships. Such ships operate in ports with lower container traffic and are relatively few in numbers. - Convertible Container Ship:
The type of vessel is with a specialized hold design, allowing compartments meant for container loading to be adapted as needed for general cargo or other type of goods.

Port Knowledge: Reefer Containers
“Knowledge of the Port Area”- Reefer Container
There are many types of containers. Have you ever seen one with a white exterior?
Why are these containers white?
This type of container is known as reefer container, and it is in white color to provide better insulation performance.
Reefer containers are used to transport frozen or perishable items, such as meat, fish, vegetables, and fresh fruits that require temperature control.
This type of container is equipped with a refrigeration unit at the front end and is fitted with insulating materials on the interior walls to ensure effective thermal insulation.

Port Knowledge: Maritime Heavyweight- Heavy-Lift Ship
"Heavy-lift ships", also known as heavy transport vessels, are specially designed to carry oversized and indivisible loads that standard ships are unable to accommodate. Heavy-lift ships can also be divided into two types:
- Semi-submersible ship:
This type of ship can load and transport other ships or floating structures as loads, carrying them offshore and delivering them to their destination. - Heavy project vessel:
This type of vessel is equipped with large unloading equipment, and is capable of operating in ports where crane or comparable unloading facilities are unavailable.

Port Knowledge: Maritime Sound Signals
The sound of beep echoes along the coast, signaling the silent dialogue between ships.
Let's see what they are actually saying!
One short blast: “I am turning to starboard.”
Two short blasts: “I am turning to port.”
Three short blasts: “I am reversing.”
One prolonged blast: “This vessel is about to leave the berth” or “This vessel is about to cross.”
Two prolonged blasts: “This vessel is preparing to dock” or “This vessel requires passage through the lock.”
Three prolonged blasts: “Warning! Someone has fallen overboard.”
PS: Occasionally, the blasts can last for one minute as a form of salute, warning, or in mourning.
Next time, listen carefully and see what the vessels are signaling.
