Suao Port Pioneers AI Smart Sprinklers: Dual-Line Defense Intercepts Wharf Loading Dust

:::

To maintain port air quality and realize environmental sustainability, the Port of Su'ao Operations Office has proactively responded to green port policies by pioneering the installation of an "AI Automatic Air-Quality Monitoring Smart Sprinkler System" at Wharf No. 4. In accordance with the Regulations Governing Air Pollution Control Facilities for Fugitive Particulate Pollutants from Stationary Sources, the wharf automatic sprinkler system applies tech-driven smart monitoring to commercial port terminal loading and unloading operations liable to cause fugitive particulate emissions. By triggering immediate automatic sprinkling upon detecting air pollution alert thresholds, the system stands as an innovative benchmark for smart air pollution control facilities across commercial ports.

Wharf No. 4 at the Port of Su'ao serves as the primary terminal for handling dust-prone bulk materials, including large white stone and fine sand. To strictly implement pollution control regulations, Wharf No. 4 was selected for this custom-built smart defense network after a precise evaluation of surrounding building heights. The system employs a "Dual-Line Air Pollution Control Mechanism" to construct a highly efficient dust interception network:

  • The First Line of Defense (Real-time Site Interception): During loading and unloading operations, water mist cannons and dust-proof nets are deployed for frontline control. This stage is initially estimated to effectively block up to 80% of fugitive dust emissions.
  • The Second Line of Defense (AI Smart Automation Linkage): When port environmental sensors detect that real-time air quality in the loading/unloading area reaches the alert threshold (PM2.5 at 12 μg/m³ or PM10 at 30 μg/m³), the system will immediately activate automatic sprinklers across the entire wharf—covering an area approximately 200 meters in length and 50 meters in depth—for a duration of 40 seconds. This measure not only further reduces pollution levels by an estimated 10% but also drastically saves labor costs associated with manual inspections and operations.

This AI smart sprinkler system is not only a concrete practice of environmental governance but also a win-win strategy that balances "loading efficiency" with "air quality." Looking ahead, the Port of Su'ao will continue to drive digital transformation and green environmental initiatives, guiding the commercial port toward a tech-driven, sustainable, and modernized smart harbor.
