Further Upgrading Port Equipment for Smart Port Transformation

Newly procured Gantry cranes at the Port of Keelung raise overall handling efficiency at the TIPC container terminal.

In response to global container transport demand and the trend toward larger vessels, berth turnover and quay handling efficiency are regarded as key indicators of port competitiveness. At its TIPC container terminal, the Port of Keelung dredged Wharves West 22–23 in 2016 and installed three 18-row Gantry cranes, and has continued to plan procurement of new Gantry cranes to increase quay handling efficiency in line with the trends of international container terminals, under a planning strategy aimed at sustainable port development.

From 2023 to 2025, the Port of Keelung's TIPC container terminal successively procured and installed two new Gantry cranes (BC-188 and BC-255) at Wharves West 17–18, enhancing quay operating capacity. The new Gantry cranes can handle two 20-foot containers simultaneously, with a maximum lifting capacity of 55 metric tons and a outreach of 46 meters, spanning 16 rows of containers and enabling container handling for 6,000 TEU-class vessels, while flexibly supporting handling operations for different container vessels along linear quays.

The new Gantry cranes not only improve container handling efficiency and increase port operating capacity, but also can substantially shorten vessel port stays and reduce carriers' operating costs. The Port of Keelung's TIPC container terminal will continue to provide premium quay services to cultivate a stellar reputation, attracting more carriers to schedule vessel calls.

Emergency Response Center Information Integration Enhancement Project
  1. As national critical infrastructure, and in response to smart port development, Keelung port has specially planned to integrate and present various port-area dynamic information in digital form, and has established an "Emergency Response Center" as a message response and contingency hub. Through the integration of diverse data on the monitoring room dashboard, key indicators such as port-area dynamics and safety monitoring are presented in real time. Its primary function is to provide commanders with reference information for contingency command during natural disasters and emergencies.
  2. In 2023, the Emergency Response Center system was built to present information related to the status of port-area facilities, quay operations, surrounding traffic flow, vessel monitoring, and gate/sentry status. After information flows and back-end analysis, the data are displayed on monitoring room screens as visualized charts and simple icons, enabling commanders and duty personnel to understand and grasp port-area dynamics comprehensively and quickly.
  3. In 2025, system functions were further enhanced and upgraded. The system dashboard was redesigned to integrate, in addition to existing port-area facility status and quay operations, equipment monitoring and harbor notification display functions. An image server was also connected to port-area surveillance cameras to provide video streams for system software use, improving the quality of key rotating images on the Emergency Response Center video wall and the image response speed when switching camera channels.
