Facing the global challenges of climate change and growing pressures on marine ecosystems, Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC) is further integrating ESG principles into its governance and operations, with environmental stewardship and ecological sustainability embedded in port development. Through cross-sector collaboration, information sharing, education and knowledge exchange, TIPC works with government agencies, academia and civil society to translate sustainability commitments into meaningful action. By balancing port development with the protection of marine and coastal ecosystems, TIPC continues to strengthen stakeholder engagement and broaden its positive impact, advancing a low-carbon, resilient and ecologically sustainable future for Taiwan’s ports.
TIPC is advancing marine conservation and environmental sustainability through cross-sector collaboration. On February 26, 2025, marking its 13th anniversary, TIPC signed a Letter of Intent with the Ocean Conservation Administration (OCA) under the Ocean Affairs Council for the “Marine Conservation & Joint Sustainability ESG Project.” The partnership combines TIPC’s port management expertise with OCA’s marine conservation capabilities to advance ocean literacy, environmental education, marine data sharing, research collaboration and biodiversity conservation. Key initiatives include exploring coral and marine species conservation in port waters, sharing water-quality monitoring data to support environmental research, and integrating ecologically responsible practices into port operations and infrastructure development. Beyond these actions, TIPC engages with policymakers, industry, academia and international experts through the OCA’s Marine Conservation ESG Forum and the inaugural Ocean Forum hosted by the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy (TAISE), exchanging insights on ocean governance, biodiversity and sustainable development while sharing Taiwan’s green port practices. Through collaboration, knowledge exchange and stakeholder engagement, TIPC continues to strengthen marine stewardship and biodiversity conservation, advancing ports as not only gateways for trade and transport, but also platforms for environmental stewardship and long-term sustainable value creation.
Talent development and knowledge sharing are essential to advancing sustainable governance. Building on its long-standing partnerships with universities in Taiwan, TIPC continues to expand its academic engagement internationally. On December 5, 2025, TIPC welcomed more than 50 faculty members and students from National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (NKUST) and Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) to the Port of Kaohsiung. Through firsthand exposure to port operations and guided visits to waterfront, ecological and cultural sites, participants explored how ports can support economic development while advancing environmental stewardship, ecological sustainability and sustainable port-city development. The visit bridged academic perspectives and real-world port practices, while showcasing Taiwan’s experience in sustainable port development to an international audience. By engaging the next generation through knowledge exchange and experiential learning, TIPC is helping sustainability values take root and carry forward.
From cross-sector partnerships and environmental data sharing to industry–academia collaboration, TIPC is integrating the principles of UN SDG 14 (Life Below Water) into port governance and operations, bringing together government, industry, academia, and other stakeholders to advance marine conservation and sustainable port development. Looking ahead, TIPC will continue to strengthen marine and biodiversity stewardship while balancing port development with ecological priorities, reinforcing the role of Taiwan’s ports not only as vital gateways for trade and transportation, but also as catalysts for marine conservation, community engagement, and long-term sustainable value creation.
