Remarks from the incoming TIPC Chairman
Advancing the positive spirit and potential of maritime commerce and creating and sustaining modern port operations have, together, defined the mission of the Taiwan International Ports Corporation and its predecessors for the past century. Taiwan’s position at the intersection of Asia and the Pacific, astride the world’s most heavily traveled and important maritime shipping lanes has given international trade a truly outsized influence over the economic development and growth of our nation. TIPC was founded in March 2012 at the behest of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) to run Taiwan’s seven international commercial ports, including Kaohsiung, Taichung, Keelung, Taipei, Hualien, Suao, and Anping, as well as to provisionally administer two domestic commercial ports at Budai and Penghu. Beyond the vitally important task of ensuring the safe and smooth handling of cargo and passengers through these ports, TIPC has steadily and proactively built mutually beneficial relationships and fostered synergistic prosperity with our port city partners. I am proud to say that, in addition to continuing to improve port business operations and profitability, linking the growth and success of our ports with that of port city partners remains one of the most important development goals of TIPC.
In light of the critical role played by TIPC ports in Taiwan’s international trade, we must continue to strategically adopt and implement technological innovation and market-oriented strategies that increase competitiveness and bolster profitability to effectively address extant challenges such as global shipping market volatility and vigorous competition from other ports in the region as well as longer-term threats from new deep-water ports in Southeast Asia and regional economic blocs. TIPC is actively shoring up and expanding its core business areas. Rising in-port investment and development activities from our main shipping company partners help ensure long-term support for our ports as key hubs of global commercial shipping. Moreover, TIPC continues to make impressive strides forward in terms of service and operational efficiencies and effectiveness through the use of state-of-the-art technologies and facilities and targeted promotion of strategic initiatives.
With regard to ongoing business diversification efforts, in terms of expanding the size of TIPC’s cruise passenger and tourism portfolio, we will strengthen relevant industry and port-city partnerships, facilitate closer cooperation between cruise ship companies and relevant local government agencies, continue enhancing passenger service and handling facilities across the TIPC port family, and continue streamlining passenger processing procedures to further boost the profile of TIPC ports as convenient and highly attractive destinations. In terms of our growing presence in the green energy sector, we are aggressively creating dedicated offshore wind power industry clusters as well as LNG offloading and storage infrastructures at TIPC ports in support of national energy transformation goals. Also, TIPC will continue to expand wind turbine technical training, New Southbound Policy investments, and other diversification-oriented initiatives to not only keep our ports in step with global trends but also expand TIPC’s overall business interests.
The entire TIPC organization will take a holistic approach to the increasingly complex nature of global logistics centered around the four core “TIPC” values of Teamwork (T), Integrity management (I), Professional services (P), and Customer creation (C). Under the “TIPC” banner, we will do our solid best to accomplish those tasks deemed critical to driving Taiwan’s maritime and port industry forward. This year, TIPC’s entire senior management has come together to, in pursuit of the three goals of teamwork, transport safety, and smart interactivity, listen to the counsel of internal and external stakeholders, prioritize staff development, streamline business development efforts, and strengthen overall operational capabilities and resilience in order to improve the services we provide to port business partners. Also, in the area of operational safety, TIPC remains dedicated to creating and running safe, high-quality port facilities that align with the highest standards. With regard to AI transformation, TIPC will continue to integrate state-of-the-art smart technologies and tools into its operations to raise port management capabilities, optimize operational effectiveness and safety, uphold environmental protection and sustainability commitments, and advance the development of Taiwan’s ports as truly sustainable business operations.
As we advance toward our 2030 goals, TIPC, leveraging its current operational foundation and resources, will take a steady, practical, business-based approach to the continued diversification and expansion of its operations. We are committed to working closely with our maritime and port industry partners to build mutual prosperity and open new horizons for both Taiwan’s ports and the maritime and port industry.
