Taiwan’s first-ever Course for International Cruise Ship Service Staff is set to lift the veil on this industry sector, which has for so long lain beyond the realm of experience of most Taiwanese.

The growth of Taiwan’s international cruise ship sector in recent years has been marked by growing numbers of vessels using Taiwan ports as homeports and operating regular routes that call at one or more Taiwan port. These trends are fueling demand in the domestic cruise vacation sector and earning high international praise for the quality of the products and services supplied by Taiwan’s F&B industry as well as opening many new opportunities for well-trained Taiwanese talent to take up successful careers in the international cruise travel sector.

In light of the limited numbers of experienced staff and limited availability of relevant education materials, the Taiwan International Ports Company (TIPC) is cooperating with the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) on the two core tasks of relaxing key legal impediments and opening courses for cruise ship service staff in line with current government policies promoting the growth of and adding professional depth to the cruise ship sector in Taiwan. It is expected that efforts will train more domestic cruise-ship service talent to take up the diverse job opportunities available aboard cruise ships. The developed courses should meet the needs and expectations of the industry and help cruise ship operators quickly and easily recruit the best domestic talent. This mutually beneficial program will widen opportunities for young Taiwanese to participate in the international cruise ship service market and can be expected to further spur growth in the domestic cruise ship sector.

The Course for International Cruise Ship Service Staff has already secured top related talent from industry, government, and academia as instructors to ensure rich, practical experience is taught on a solid foundation of theory and tied together with real-life case studies and field visits. Additionally, plans call for helping match course graduates to available and potential cruise ship company job opportunities. The scope of this course is unprecedented. Open registration for the course opened last week to an enthusiastic reception, with the class filled before the week was out.

Reflecting the MOTC’s ongoing commitment to promoting new employment opportunities in the cruise services sector, plans are already underway to hold this course again after the present course is finished.
