State-of-the-Art CATOS Terminal Management System Up and Running at Port of Kaohsiung’s Self-Managed Container Terminal

The Port of Kaohsiung, TIPC has implemented the Computer Automated Terminal Operation System (CATOS) to further improve efficiencies and management capabilities at its self-managed container terminal. This system, which came online in November 2016, is currently running smoothly. CATOS gathers and coordinates data from control stations, container yards, and ships and provides real-time supervision and control functions. CATOS marks a further significant enhancement in the overall competitiveness of Taiwan’s international commercial ports.

Container handling operations at Port of Kaohsiung Public Container Wharves Nos. 120 and 121 have been performed in accordance with a public-bid contract since July 31st, 2015 by Hyundai Merchant Marine. These self-managed wharves are designated as “feeder” wharves and are equipped to handle the special needs of feeder vessels as well as to meet the emergency / temporary berthing facility needs of shipping companies with leased wharves at the port. With these purposes in mind, the Port of Kaohsiung established the Public Container Wharf Operations Center, with responsibilities to provide stevedoring services in a systematic manner that provides service solutions tailored to specific client needs. The center is committed to creating solutions that concurrently benefit shipping company clients, the port, and cargo owners.

The Port of Kaohsiung, Taiwan’s largest international commercial port, is a key center of international commerce and shipping-industry expansion as well as a hub port for container shipments throughout the Asia-Pacific Region. After pushing handled container volumes to 10.46 million TEU in 2016, the port will focus on developing the facilities and businesses necessary to increase handling volumes and values in the future in light of current economic uncertainties and the potential impacts of the April 2017 reshuffling of ocean carrier alliances.
