Budai Port, the closest commercial port on mainland Taiwan to the Penghu Archipelago in the Taiwan Strait, logged strong ferry passenger handling numbers in 2020 despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, with 420,000 passengers handled for the year. Five ferry service companies regularly ply the Budai - Penghu (Magong) route, making a total of 10 transits daily. Kaixuan Blue Water Transport recently acted on its continued bullish outlook for growth on the Budai - Penghu route by purchasing a new ferry, the Kai Xuan No. 8, which it expects to put into route service to increase passenger handling capacities once current pandemic restrictions are loosened and ferry services return to normal.

The Budai Port Visitor Service Center Renovation Project is being promoted jointly by the Maritime Port Bureau (MPB) and the Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC) to significantly enhance the environment and experience for ferry passengers at Budai Port. The MPB has budgeted NT$238 million in funding for this project, with TIPC taking responsibilities for project planning and execution. Multiple meetings have already been convened with scholars and experts from various fields to ensure that plans sufficiently reflect and balance practical and aesthetic considerations and needs and that the finished project will reinvigorate the original site, expand tourism-related business, and appropriately reflect local cultural character. Innovation, comfort, convenience, and warmth will all be woven deeply through this new, welcoming space for passengers. When finished, the one-story Budai Port Visitor Service Center will be twice as large as the original building, offering 5,050m2 compared to the originally available 2,545m2. The building will have a 2,000-person capacity and is expected to be finished and ready for service in April 2022 at the start of the 2022 ferry season.

Budai Port is continuing to enhance port infrastructures to improve the experience of its ferry passengers. In addition, port officials are working closely with the Southwest Coast National Scenic Area Administration and the Chiayi County Government to tap into area tourism resources and local-character commercial districts to further draw visitors to the area, stimulate local economic development, and add local job opportunities. Budai Port is working hard to be a modern, high-tech magnet for passenger and cargo transportation to and from Taiwan's offshore islands and an engine for tourism growth in the Yunlin-Chiayi-Nantou region.
