On August 12th, Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC) Chairman Hsien-yi Lee highlighted the many initiatives taken by TIPC during the first half of 2020 to improve the cargo and passenger handling facilities and the general operations of TIPC subsidiary ports with the goals of enhancing service quality and meeting client needs. Among the initiatives mentioned were, at the Port of Keelung - the completion of the Xinxi No. 7 Warehouse facility in April (with facility lease announcements set for release soon) and the completion of phase one of the East District Passenger Terminal in late July; at the Port of Taichung - the completion and opening of the Zhong 1st Road extension in February, the completion of offshore wind farm wharves (5A, 5B, and 106) at the end of June, and the completion of Phase 2 of Mitsui Outlet Mall's open bids in late July; at the Port of Kaohsiung - the opening of the new Sea Freight Cargo Express facility in June and the opening of a landmark new revolving footbridge in the Penglai / Pier 2 area on July 6th; at Suao Port - the completion of Warehouse No. 4 in late February; and, at the Port of Hualien - the completion of scheduled improvements to the port's Passenger Terminal in January.

Chairman Lee also addressed ongoing projects including, at the Port of Keelung - the relocation and reopening of the port's military wharves and support facilities and the announcement of public bids for the commercial lease of retail and other commercial space at the West Wharf (4-6) passenger & business terminal; at Taipei Port - the installation of 3rd and 4th-phase dikes and reclamation of new land in the South District; at the Port of Taichung - implementation of expansion projects, construction of heavy-cargo (wind turbine) Wharf No. 36, and announcement of the bid for the port's marina; at Anping Port - announcement of the bid for B District at the port's new marina; at the Port of Kaohsiung – construction of the 7th container terminal and new Port Terminal Building; and at the Port of Hualien – planning on the development of a new leisure & tourism corridor. All these, he noted, are projects that will help promote stable, long-term growth of ports within the TIPC group.

In addition, TIPC is leveraging advanced technology to further enhance port safety, efficiency, environmental friendliness, and long-term sustainability. In line with MOTC ‘people-centric transportation’ ideals, TIPC is actively developing and promoting ‘Trans-SMART’ enhancement measures. Related projects scheduled for completion by the end of this year (2020) include implementation of smart vessel operating assistance system and smart control & management system. In the next phase, information integration, interconnectivity, application, exchange, and sharing will create a platform for facilitating the cross-platform sharing of big data. Later phases will create a strategic decision-making central command center and introduce the use in TIPC ports of automated vehicles. These and other measures will improve the business ecosystem at TIPC ports for the benefit of all stakeholders.

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to have a global impact. To reduce the pandemic's impact on Taiwan's shipping sector, TIPC is working closely with central government authorities on promoting various relief and recovery programs. TIPC is currently working to adjust its marketing / business incentive system in consultation with all interested parties in order to best partner with port stakeholders and partners and further advance the international competitiveness of the TIPC port group.
