Working to meet the increasingly diverse range of trucks (e.g., 5th generation green trucks, bonded trucks, tanker trucks, oversized container trucks) entering and exiting its ports, the Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC) has taken the lead in installing new automatic gates this year that incorporate artificial intelligence (AI)-based smart-impact-analysis functionality.  The new system integrates with the automatic gateway access system installed at the Port of Kaohsiung in 2004 to instantly check, compare, record, and manage people, vehicles, and cargoes entering and leaving the port. The new system reduces judgment errors and increases the level of accuracy in identifying vehicle type in order to conduct logic-based comparisons of differences. This year, the Port of Kaohsiung has already implemented the new system on 40 port-access gate lanes (20 entry and 20 departure).

The increasing range and depth of AI applications are spurring industries across the spectrum to consider not only how to apply AI in regular activities but how to best leverage AI to innovate and improve operations. Reflecting its cornerstone vision to use advanced technologies to raise operating efficiencies, TIPC began integrating AI-enabled functionality into the automatic gateway system at the Port of Kaohsiung in mid-2019 with the primary goal of improving vehicle identification accuracy, which is critical to strengthening overall port safety controls for people, vehicles, and cargo.

An official statement released by the Port of Kaohsiung notes that 5 traffic control points with 11 automated gate lanes at the port’s bulk-cargo focused Zhongdao District and the 2nd Container Terminal have been upgraded with wide-angle surveillance cameras and the new AI vehicle recognition module. The new system simulates human decision-making behavior and deductive reasoning to run real-time analyses on the key features of every vehicle in order to significantly raise the accuracy of logic-based comparisons and thus the accuracy and efficacy of customs release decisions. Moreover, the massive amount of records generated by the system may be easily audited and searched by customs and police authorities.

New AI vehicle-recognition capabilities significantly increase the original system’s scope and flexibility in terms of vehicle discernment. Visible cues may continue to be learned by and integrated into the AI module. The system is currently able to accurately distinguish tanker trucks, bonded trucks, and load-bearing flatbed trucks, with an overall vehicle-recognition accuracy rate of nearly 95%.

TIPC adds that, in addition to expanding the rollout of AI modules to other automated gateway lanes at TIPC ports, the company will continue to work to expand the use of effective and advantageous AI applications as part of continuing efforts in order to deliver more comprehensive and convenient services to its clients and customers, raise port operating efficiencies, and enhance worldwide competitiveness.
