As part of its response to the general rise in the risk of security incidents at ports worldwide, the Port of Kaohsiung will hold the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Practice Drill on August 23rd, 2019 at (passenger) Wharf No. 8 in cooperation with the Kaohsiung Harbor Police Department. The drill is expected to strengthen response preparedness and capabilities in the event of a major safety/security incident and will involve all relevant port agencies and organizations.

The Port of Kaohsiung announced that the drill would focus on the three aspects of maintaining port facility security, preventing the takeover of port operations, and preventing damage to the port and its facilities. The port’s security team in charge of passenger wharves will conduct the port facility security portion of the drill, which will be predicated on a terrorist attack on the port leading to a major security incident requiring an increase in ISPS security level. Next, police, fire, and Coast Guard units will implement the takeover-prevention and damage-prevention portions of the drill, taking appropriate action to resolve the crisis and current threat to the port.

This ISPS practice drill will be run jointly by the Port of Kaohsiung and the Kaohsiung Harbor Police Department and will involve 14 public and private port organizations in various drill exercises. By conducting these exercises, it is hoped that all involved will be better prepared and confident to protect the safety of port staffs, vessels, and facilities in the event of a security incident.
