Port of Taichung, TIPC issued a public bid on December 30th, 2020 for the lease and development of (approx.) one hectare of land in the port's Industrial Development Zone. The most favorable bid was submitted by Whale Shipping & Enterprise, Inc. Port of Taichung and Whale Shipping executives signed the lease documents for the land on February 1st of this year, with the company outlining plans to establish a warehouse and logistics center on the site. At a later date, Whale Shipping's Port of Taichung Free Trade Zone (FTZ) business activities are expected to require adding further warehouse capacity and establishing integrated sales and production operations.

A statement issued by the Port of Taichung notes that Whale Shipping & Enterprise already holds a long-term lease on land adjacent to Wharf Nos. 7 and 8 and is engaged in FTZ warehousing and simple-processing activities related to paper pulp, semi-finished glass panels, semiconductor-related equipment, and automotive products. The company is expanding its FTZ business to more effectively and comprehensively meet the service needs of other port businesses and to leverage available port land to improve logistics capabilities and infuse critical new value into this sector.

Port of Taichung President Sean Lu remarked that Whale Shipping anticipates investing NT$800 million to develop its newly leased site. Construction on the facility will commence this year (2021), with commercial operations expected to begin during the fourth quarter of 2022. Whale Shipping's new facility is expected to increase the port's handled import/export/transshipment volume by 25,000~48,000mt per year and handled cargo value by NT$100 million per year. Moreover, the facility is expected to stimulate new business activity in and around the port, adding new jobs to the local economy and moving the Port of Taichung further toward its sustainable business goals.
