The Taiwan International Ports Corporation (TIPC) has nearly finished the construction of two new wharves and associated embankment-reinforcement works in the vicinity of the Port of Taichung’s South Basin as part of ongoing efforts to raise operational quality and safety at the port. Once brought online, Wharf Nos. 44 and 45 will regularly handle sand, gravel, and related bulk commodities. The land adjacent to these wharves will be opened to sand and gravel sector business investors that are interested in establishing related handling and storage facilities that meet domestic environmental-protection regulations.

This project includes the construction of 460m of new wharf length, the lengthening of Wharf 43 by a further 50m, and dredging the two new wharves to an operable depth of -12.0m as well as the construction of embankment reinforcement works and the installation of new vehicle access roads, drainage facilities, a water supply network, electrical lines, lighting, and surveillance facilities.

Construction is scheduled to finish this month (October). Both wharves will accommodate 30~40 DWT-class handy bulk carriers. In line with TIPC’s centralized management of Taiwan’s international ports, these two new wharves are expected to encourage new strategic investment and bring wharf operations at the Port of Taichung further into line with domestic environmental-protection regulations. In addition to increasing land utilization, cargo handling, warehousing, and port administration-related revenue streams, this project represents an effective step forward in enhancing the sustainability of the operational environment at the Port of Taichung.
